About Martumili Artists
Martumili Artists was founded by Martu people residing in the communities of Parnpajinya (Newman), Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritji, Irrungadji, and Warralong. It draws upon significant influences from Aboriginal art history. These artists and their families hold traditional custodianship over extensive areas encompassing the Great Sandy, Little Sandy, and Gibson Deserts, as well as the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) region. Until the 1950s and 1960s, most Martu people maintained a wholly independent, nomadic desert lifestyle. However, they eventually migrated into settlements due to prolonged and severe drought conditions. Presently, Martu communities thrive independently, with regular visits to regional centers like Newman and Port Hedland.
